Camping in winter at Red River Gorge, temperature 35 degrees at midnight. I used no tent, slept under the stars with only a sleeping bag. Learned to camp and more in the Army, including West Point, which is in the Hudson River Valley. Camped one weekend in the Catskill Mountains with my father, too.
