Ah, grandma’s! My grandmother raised me my first five years while my mother worked in two Detroit auto plants. My grandmother spoke no English for many years. And my mother knew no English when she arrived at Ellis Island at the age of 12. I spent 10 summers with my grandparents on their farm while my biological parents were 500 miles away. I would take an Amtrak train back back-and-forth to get to their farm. My grandmother was born in Chelm and attended school a total of three years.
